China has built the world’s largest and fastest-growing renewable energy system, said Zhou Haibing, Deputy Director of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), at a press conference on Wednesday.
According to Zhou, by the end of May, China’s installed renewable energy capacity had reached 2.09 billion kilowatts — more than double the capacity recorded at the end of the country’s 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016–2020).
“Today, one out of every three kilowatt-hours of electricity consumed across China comes from green energy sources,” Zhou stated, emphasizing the importance of renewables in the nation’s energy mix.
He also highlighted the rapid growth of China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) market. By 2024, the number of NEVs in China had reached 31.4 million, up from 4.92 million at the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan — a major leap forward in sustainable transportation.
