Chinese Premier Li Qiang said Wednesday that China is ready to work with the United Nations to implement the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) and to build a more just and equitable global governance system.
Li made the remarks during a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the general debate of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. He noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping recently introduced the GGI at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Tianjin, offering China’s wisdom and solutions for strengthening and improving global governance.
Li emphasized that China pledges to enhance communication and coordination with the UN and all relevant parties and make greater contributions to world peace and development. He also highlighted that the UN has played an irreplaceable role over the past 80 years in maintaining peace and security, promoting economic and social progress, and safeguarding human rights.
For his part, UN Secretary-General Guterres expressed appreciation for Xi Jinping’s important video address at the UN Climate Summit. He said that the GGI proposed by Xi is rich in substance, closely aligned with the values upheld by the United Nations, and responds effectively to the strong calls from the international community for reforming the global governance system. Guterres stressed that the UN regards China as a strong pillar of multilateralism and looks forward to closer cooperation with China in defending fairness and justice, promoting global development, advancing governance reforms, and enhancing the representation of the Global South in multilateral mechanisms.
