China’s National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) has approved the world’s first medical device standard for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) that utilize artificial intelligence to process electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Set to take effect on September 1, 2027, the standard establishes systematic technical specifications and testing methods across the full data lifecycle, from acquisition and processing to annotation and storage. By creating a unified quality benchmark for datasets used to train signal-decoding algorithms, the regulation addresses critical industry challenges in dataset consistency, strengthens patient safety, fills a void in global governance, and is expected to expedite the clinical translation and commercialization of therapeutic BCI devices.
