China’s homegrown innovative pharmaceuticals are rapidly expanding their international reach, reflecting growing global confidence in the country’s drug development. According to the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA), the total value of overseas licensing deals has surged 36 percent year-on-year to surpass 120 billion U.S. dollars, with upfront payments exceeding 10 billion dollars. Regulatory reforms have driven record clinical trials—particularly in advanced cell and gene therapies—enabling the market approval of 59 innovative drugs since early 2026. This dynamic landscape continues to attract major foreign investments, including Eli Lilly’s multi-billion-dollar expansion, as authorities commit to further streamlining regulatory channels for breakthrough therapies.
