Beijing, December 15 (Xinhua) — China’s retail sales of consumer goods increased by 4 percent year on year in the first eleven months of 2025, reaching a total of 45.61 trillion yuan (approximately USD 6.45 trillion), according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
The data showed that retail sales of consumer goods in urban areas rose by 3.9 percent compared to the same period last year, while sales in rural areas increased by 4.4 percent.
During the January–November period, online retail sales of goods grew at a faster pace, rising by 5.7 percent year on year to approximately 11.82 trillion yuan. This figure accounted for more than one-quarter of China’s total retail sales of consumer goods.
In November alone, retail sales of consumer goods increased by 1.3 percent compared with the same month of the previous year.
Fu Linghui, spokesperson for the NBS, stated at a press conference held in Beijing on Friday that the scale of market sales continued to expand in November, while growth in service-related retail sales gained further momentum.
According to the data, retail sales of services rose by 5.4 percent year on year in the first eleven months of 2025, representing an increase of 0.1 percentage points compared to the January–October period. Fu noted that service retail categories such as culture and sports, as well as telecommunications and information services, recorded double-digit growth.
Fu also emphasized that China implemented more proactive and effective macroeconomic policies in 2025, introducing a series of measures aimed at expanding domestic demand, promoting industrial upgrading, and stimulating economic activity. These measures played a significant role in supporting the stable operation of the economy.
He further noted that the effects of these policies were reflected in rising consumer demand, particularly in increased sales of home appliances and telecommunications equipment, driven in part by the country’s consumer goods trade-in programs.
