The Muhanga-Nyange road, located southwest of Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, is being renovated by the Chinese construction company Stecol Corporation. Once a pothole-filled dirt road, it is now being paved with asphalt and equipped with modern infrastructure. This 29-kilometer transport corridor connects the country’s southern, western, and northern regions. Jiang Pengfei, the project’s general manager, stated that once completed, the road will significantly improve transportation speeds and provide a safer driving experience. To enhance safety, the road’s curves have been widened, speed bumps have been added, and sidewalks and drainage systems have been built.
Beyond improving infrastructure, the project is also boosting the local economy by creating over 400 jobs and facilitating access to markets and trade. Devotha Kubwayo, a resident of Nyarusange, noted that transportation was previously a major challenge, but now vehicles are available at all hours. Fabrice Ngenzi, a secretary for the project, emphasized how the Chinese company has provided him with career growth opportunities. “Chinese companies are creating jobs and transferring technical expertise in Rwanda. We want more of them to come, as they offer young professionals valuable experience, especially in engineering,” he said.
