As the 2025 Chinese New Year approaches, the bustling Lanzhou West Railway Station in northwest China’s Gansu Province reflects the annual travel rush of the holiday season. This year, foreign student volunteers joined the station staff, assisting passengers with luggage, security checks, and providing information services, adding an international touch to the festive atmosphere.
Ten international students from Lanzhou University, hailing from Kenya, Chad, Laos, Afghanistan, and Madagascar, are volunteering throughout the holiday to experience China’s New Year travel rush firsthand. Afghan student Kazimi Jafar donned his uniform early in the morning to guide passengers. “The value Chinese people place on family bonds is very similar to our culture. Experiencing and contributing to this festival is truly meaningful,” he said.
Madagascan volunteer Rojolalaina Karina Lucette was impressed by China’s massive transportation system. “In my country, people mostly travel by private vehicles. China moves millions of people in such a short time—it’s incredible. Being part of this system fills me with pride,” she said. China’s advanced high-speed rail network not only facilitates domestic travel but also serves as an inspiration for the students’ home countries.
