Chinese President Xi Jinping called for regional development and cooperation at the APEC Summit held in Gyeongju, Republic of Korea (South Korea). In his address, Xi proposed a five-point initiative to build an Asia-Pacific community based on multilateralism, open trade, and inclusive growth.
Attending the 32nd APEC Informal Leaders’ Meeting, President Xi highlighted that since its establishment 36 years ago, APEC has played a crucial role in promoting openness across the Asia-Pacific region and transforming it into the most dynamic economic area in the world.
Noting that the world is undergoing profound changes and turbulence, Xi emphasized that the Asia-Pacific region is facing growing instability and uncertainty. He stated:
“APEC should remain committed to its founding purpose of promoting economic growth and improving people’s well-being. We must uphold the principles of sharing opportunities and achieving win-win outcomes through openness and development. At the same time, we should advance inclusive economic globalizationand work toward building an Asia-Pacific community with a shared future.
