China’s 42nd Antarctic expedition team has departed from Shanghai for a mission aimed at testing new technologies in the icy wilderness of Antarctica. The expedition, expected to last until May 2026, is supported by China’s two polar research icebreakers, Xuelong and Xuelong 2.
During the expedition, a series of newly developed technologies will be deployed and tested under extreme Antarctic conditions. Among the key equipment for performance verification are the Snow Leopard 6×6 wheeled vehicle, independently developed and manufactured by China, and the THT550 high-power fully hydraulic towing apparatus.
According to Long Wei, Deputy Director of the Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Administration, “The mission is supported by the research icebreakers Xuelong and Xuelong 2, and the team is expected to complete its operations and return to China by May 2026.”
