In Qingdao, located in Shandong Province in eastern China, a China-made ultra-large crude carrier (ULCC) with a capacity of 319,000 tonnes and ready for ammonia transport was delivered on Monday to a Belgian shipowner.
Features of the Ammonia-Fueled ULCC and Its Zero-Carbon Goal
The vessel is equipped with two 6,000-cubic-meter ammonia fuel tanks, along with dedicated space for the associated piping and control system layouts. This design allows the ship to switch to ammonia fuel within 30 days at a significantly lower cost compared to conventional retrofit solutions.
Once ammonia fuel is adopted, the carrier is expected to achieve “zero-carbon” emissions over its entire lifecycle.
