Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met today in Beijing with Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand. During the meeting, Wang stated that China would strengthen communication with Canada in order to enhance mutual trust, remove obstacles, and deepen bilateral cooperation.

Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi met today in Beijing with Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand.

Wang Yi noted that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney began an official visit to China yesterday, marking the first visit by a Canadian prime minister to China in eight years. He described the visit as a milestone with both symbolic and substantive significance for bilateral relations. Wang expressed his belief that the forthcoming meeting between the two countries’ leaders would provide new perspectives for the development of China–Canada relations. He emphasized that the contemporary world is undergoing profound and complex transformations unprecedented in scale, and that the impact of China–Canada relations extends beyond the bilateral level.

Wang Yi stated that China would work to enhance communication with Canada, build mutual trust, remove barriers, and deepen cooperation. He further emphasized efforts to ensure that bilateral relations progress in a stable, pragmatic, and healthy manner under the new circumstances.

Stressing the importance of a rational, friendly, and tolerant approach between the two sides, Wang called for the resolution of differences within a framework of mutual respect. He underscored the need to send positive signals through cooperation-oriented agendas, noting that fostering positive expectations is essential for building greater trust. Wang also highlighted the importance of contributing to the development of a new type of strategic partnership between China and Canada.

Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand, for her part, emphasized that Canada’s new government attaches great importance to its relationship with China, noting that bilateral relations have gained positive momentum since last year. She stated that Prime Minister Carney’s visit aims to engage in in-depth dialogue with the Chinese leadership, clarify the future direction of bilateral relations, and resume dialogue across various fields to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes. Anand further expressed Canada’s willingness to strengthen coordination with China on multilateral issues and to advance the strategic partnership between the two countries.
