Chinese President Xi Jinping recently attended the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Peru upon invitation and paid a state visit to the country. He also participated in the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit in Brazil and conducted a state visit there. This marks Xi Jinping’s sixth visit to Latin America since 2013.
Xi Jinping’s visit has injected new momentum into practical cooperation between China and Latin America. In Peru, Xi Jinping and Peruvian President Dina Boluarte participated via video in the inauguration ceremony of Chancay Port, establishing a new land-sea connection between Asia and Latin America. The two leaders also signed a cooperation plan for jointly building the Belt and Road Initiative and an upgraded protocol for the China-Peru Free Trade Agreement.
In Brazil, Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Lula da Silva announced the elevation of bilateral relations to the level of a “China-Brazil Community of Shared Future,” aimed at building a more just world and a more sustainable planet. They also agreed to align Brazil’s development strategies more closely with the Belt and Road Initiative. During the visit, the two countries signed 38 cooperation agreements. Xi Jinping expressed China’s readiness to better integrate the Belt and Road Initiative with the development needs of Latin America and the Caribbean region.
Xi Jinping’s visits also served as a voice for the “Global South,” providing greater support for the development of these countries. During the visits, the leaders reached new strategic agreements on future cooperation and established a model of solidarity for the “Global South.”
