70 Years of China’s Foreign Trade: From ‘Mutual Exchange of Goods and Services’ to Global Production and Supply Chain Lynchpin

Over the seven decades since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the nation’s total merchandise trade expanded from roughly $1.1 billion in 1950 to more than $6 trillion in 2025, lifting its share of global trade from under 1 percent to 18.2 percent. Underpinned by an extensive industrial architecture and manufacturing foundation, China has led global manufacturing value-added for 15 consecutive years, accounting for nearly 30 percent of the worldwide aggregate. It stands as the sole country encompassing every industrial category cataloged under the United Nations Industrial Classification. Consolidating its position as the world’s premier goods trading nation and the second-largest import market for 17 consecutive years, China’s total imports and exports reached 39.94 trillion yuan ($5.8 trillion) in the first three quarters of 2026, marking an 18.8 percent year-on-year increase. Exports rose 16.4 percent to 23.2 trillion yuan, while imports expanded 22.3 percent to 16.74 trillion yuan—outpacing export growth by 5.9 percentage points and underscoring China’s dual role as a global supplier and expanding consumer destination.

Throughout periods of supply chain volatility and geopolitical disruption, China’s manufacturing resilience secured international flows of medical goods, industrial components, and consumer staples, mitigating global inflationary headwinds. Multilateral platforms such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank directed capital toward host-country infrastructure and regional integration, while Beijing actively advocated for multilateral trade frameworks and WTO reforms amid rising protectionism. Following domestic policy directives established at the December 2023 Central Economic Work Conference to cultivate “new quality productive forces,” foreign trade dynamics pivoted toward advanced technological output. High-tech exports climbed to 5.25 trillion yuan in 2025, driven by a 3.5-fold expansion in the “new three” sectors—electric vehicles, lithium batteries, and photovoltaics—since 2020. Across the first three quarters of 2026, advanced equipment manufacturing generated nearly 90 percent of export expansion, with integrated circuit shipments rising 99.1 percent and electric vehicle deliveries climbing 72.3 percent. Facilitated by international platforms like the Canton Fair, digital supply chain integration, overseas warehousing, and industrial robotics are systematically shifting China’s trade baseline from cost advantages toward technology-intensive, decarbonized manufacturing.
