In Wasit Province, Iraq, the Huashade power plant—located on the banks of the Tigris River—stands out as the country’s largest thermal power plant, built by Shanghai Electric Group. With a total installed capacity of 2540 MW from 6 generator units operating around the clock, the plant has played a crucial role in rebuilding Iraq’s energy infrastructure by providing uninterrupted electricity to many regions.
Commissioned in 2015, the Huashade power plant revitalized the energy system that had been severely damaged by years of conflict. As of January, the plant’s total generation exceeded 16 billion kWh, accounting for about 20% of Iraq’s total electricity production, and it has created approximately 3,000 jobs for the local economy.
During this year’s Spring Festival, critical maintenance work is underway for the plant’s fifth and sixth units. Project manager Xu Guangjiang, working with his maintenance team on the banks of the Tigris, remarked, “Maintenance is like a regular health check-up for the power plant; although we miss our families during the holidays, as a Chinese company, it is our responsibility to safeguard the lights of Iraq.”
He also noted that the strategic partnership between China and Iraq, along with the cooperation agreements under the Belt and Road Initiative, has sown the seeds of peace and development along the banks of the Tigris.
