China is ramping up its support for women who remain in rural areas while their husbands work away from home for extended periods. A newly launched multi-department initiative aims to provide vocational training, employment assistance, and various social support measures for these women.
According to a working plan jointly issued by 11 state departments, rural left-behind women will receive training in crafts and vocational skills to improve their capabilities and expand job opportunities. The plan also encourages their involvement in providing care services for left-behind children, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
In addition, support will be offered to rural left-behind women who are living with disabilities or facing financial difficulties, along with their families. Charitable organizations are also encouraged to carry out targeted public welfare initiatives aimed at this group.
The plan further emphasizes the importance of protecting rural left-behind women’s legal rights, preventing discrimination and domestic violence, and expanding access to healthcare services.”Rural left-behind women” refers to those who continue living in rural areas while their husbands work in other locations for more than six months.
