Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced on Tuesday that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Tianjin Summit will be held from August 31 to September 1, 2025. Speaking at a joint press conference with SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev in Tianjin, Wang noted that leaders from over 20 countries and representatives from 10 international organizations will attend the summit and related events.
On the same day, Wang Yi — also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee — chaired the Council of Foreign Ministers’ meeting of the SCO member states. The meeting was attended by foreign ministers or representatives from Belarus, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, as well as the SCO Secretary-General and the Director of the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure.
During the meeting, Wang called for building greater consensus to strengthen the organization and proposed five development suggestions: staying true to the founding vision and promoting the “Shanghai Spirit,” consolidating security, fostering mutually beneficial development, promoting friendship and neighborliness, and defending fairness and justice. Wang thanked member states for supporting China’s rotating presidency and said the SCO is poised to enter a new phase of high-quality development through collective efforts.
All participants praised China’s effective leadership as the rotating chair and expressed their commitment to working closely with China to ensure the summit’s success. They also emphasized the SCO’s critical role in fostering regional trust, development, and security. In light of global instability, participants stressed the importance of promoting the Shanghai Spirit, defending sovereignty and territorial integrity, combating the “three evil forces” of terrorism, extremism, and separatism, and enhancing cooperation across sectors. They called for intercultural dialogue, upholding the authority of the United Nations, opposing unilateralism, and resolving global disputes peacefully through dialogue and negotiation.
