China has emerged as the global leader in clean hydrogen investments, with its green hydrogen production capacity surpassing 220,000 tonnes per year. As of the end of September, China accounted for 30 percent of global clean hydrogen investments, securing the top position worldwide. The country’s annual green hydrogen production capacity has exceeded 220,000 tonnes, meeting more than half of global output.
Wan Yanming, Secretary-General of the China Hydrogen Energy Alliance, shared key data on the sector. Wan noted that China’s green hydrogen production capacity exceeds 220,000 tonnes annually, constituting over 50 percent of global production.
He also highlighted the country’s expanding hydrogen energy infrastructure, stating that the number of operational hydrogen refueling stations has surpassed 540, representing 40 percent of the global total.
Rapid advances are also being recorded thanks to innovative technologies in the hydrogen energy sector. The cost of producing hydrogen through electrolysis has fallen to 20–30 yuan per kilogram—a decline of roughly 40 percent compared to 2020. With the advancement of these technologies, significant breakthroughs are being achieved in areas such as green ammonia and methanol production, long-distance pipeline transmission, and offshore hydrogen energy development.
