In Alexandria, Egypt’s second-largest city, the Abu Qir Container Terminal buzzes with activity against the backdrop of the azure Mediterranean. Built by China Harbour Engineering Company, this deep-water port, the largest in Egypt, not only boosts maritime transport and trade but also strengthens cultural and economic ties between China and Egypt.
The project was handed over in October 2024 and has since entered a one-year warranty and maintenance period. Chinese engineers, together with their Egyptian counterparts, conduct regular inspections to ensure the port’s sustainability. The application of advanced technologies and innovative solutions unique to China has enhanced the operational efficiency of the port, bolstering Alexandria’s economic infrastructure.
Supporting Local Workforce through Training and Employment
The project has created over 2,000 direct job opportunities in Egypt while equipping hundreds of local engineers and technicians with internationally recognized skills. Training sessions led by Chinese experts introduced smart building management systems and modern port technologies, enhancing the technical expertise of local employees. Egyptian engineers who attended the training expressed that the knowledge and work discipline they gained from their Chinese colleagues have significantly contributed to their professional growth.
Strengthening Cultural Ties
The Abu Qir Port is not just an economic bridge but also a platform for cultural exchange. Chinese and Egyptian employees engage in joint events, gaining deeper insights into each other’s cultures. During Chinese New Year celebrations, Egyptian staff immerse themselves in traditional Chinese customs, resonating with the holiday’s message of peace and harmony.
This collaboration highlights how the partnership between China and Egypt extends beyond economic dimensions to cultural ones. Through projects developed under the Belt and Road Initiative, the two nations continue to lay the groundwork for a shared future.
