According to a March 3 article in Power magazine, China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is transforming global electricity infrastructure. For countries in the Global South, the initiative is seen as a transformative economic cooperation platform, providing much-needed infrastructure, energy security, and industrial modernization. Notably, the initiative has quickly delivered tangible results in helping developing economies expand their energy infrastructure.
A report by consulting firm Wood Mackenzie highlights that Chinese companies have completed numerous power projects under the BRI, with billions of dollars invested. While most projects have been carried out in Asia, Africa follows as the second-largest recipient. In particular, renewable energy capacity is expected to increase significantly in Pakistan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, and Malaysia.
The Energy Impact of the Belt and Road
InitiativeInitially, the BRI focused on transportation and logistics projects, but in recent years, it has expanded to include energy infrastructure, digital transformation, and industrial investments. The “Green Silk Road” plays a key role in this expansion, emphasizing investments in solar, wind, and hydropower, while the “Digital Silk Road” strengthens China’s global presence in AI, 5G, and smart energy solutions.
Bridging Infrastructure Gaps in the Global South
The BRI is addressing critical infrastructure shortages, particularly in regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Latin America, where Western funding has traditionally been insufficient. By financing power plants and other essential infrastructure, China aims to unlock economic growth opportunities for developing countries.
Today, China has emerged as a leading architect of energy systems in developing nations, actively working to ensure progress through cooperation. Officials emphasize that the initiative is not solely for China’s benefit but is instead part of a broader effort to achieve modernization alongside developing nations. As the gap between the Global North and South continues to widen, the Belt and Road Initiative offers a viable path toward modernization for developing economies.
