The 1,035-kilometer railway connecting Kunming in China’s Yunnan province to Vientiane, the capital of Laos, has garnered significant interest from international travelers. German vlogger Robert Adolf and his mother traveled along this route, immersing themselves in the region’s rich cultural heritage. Adolf highlighted Yunnan’s diversity, home to more than 20 ethnic groups, and emphasized how the railway has made it much easier to access rural areas. He noted the warm, family-like atmosphere in small towns, where locals dressed in traditional attire keep their cultural heritage alive.
Additionally, the China-Laos cross-border train is a popular choice for thousands of passengers traveling home or exploring new destinations during the Chinese New Year holiday season. At Kunming South Station, waiting rooms are bustling with travelers speaking Chinese, Lao, Thai, and English. Among them, an American passenger expressed appreciation for the convenience and efficiency of train travel, while Thai passengers also emphasized how the railway has improved regional transportation. Traditional decorations, such as red paper-cut ornaments inside train compartments, added a festive touch to the journey, marking the first time that UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage of the Spring Festival was reflected in railway travel.
Since its launch in 2021, this railway has transported over 43 million passengers and 48.3 million tons of cargo. By boosting both investment and tourism, it has strengthened economic and cultural interactions in the region. “This railway serves as a bridge between the Chinese and Laotian people,” said a Laotian TV host, noting the increasing international interest in the route. Officials also pointed out that due to high demand, tickets sell out quickly, and efforts are underway to expand capacity to meet the growing needs of travelers.
