On December 27, the groundbreaking ceremony for the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan Railway Project was held in Jalalabad, Kyrgyzstan. Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to the ceremony. Highlighting the significance of the project, the message reflected the high expectations for cooperation among the three countries. President Xi emphasized that the railway would serve as a new example of collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) framework and strengthen the close China-Central Asia community of shared destiny.

The project brings to life the long-awaited connection between China, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. Geng Jun, from the First Survey and Design Institute of China Railways, stated, “This project is a major step forward, achieved through the joint efforts of the leaders of the three countries. We will mobilize our expertise in design and construction to complete this railway to the highest standards.” Uzbekistan media editor Kenzayev described the project as a “historic milestone” for Central Asia’s transportation infrastructure. Starting in China’s Xinjiang region, the railway will pass through Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, creating new opportunities for trade routes extending to Europe. Experts predict that this route will not only boost regional trade but also facilitate access for Central Asian countries to South Asian and Middle Eastern markets.

    Contribution to Regional Development

As highlighted in President Xi Jinping’s message, the project aims to improve not only trade but also the living standards of local populations. In Kyrgyzstan, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities and contribute significantly to infrastructure development. Shaitov, an international relations expert from Uzbekistan, noted that the railway could spark significant growth in the agriculture, tourism, and industrial sectors.

New Opportunities and a Shared Future

The railway project opens new avenues for cooperation between China and Central Asia. Abdukhalilov, Chairman of the Tashkent Chamber of Commerce in Uzbekistan, emphasized that the project provides an unparalleled platform for international experience and technology sharing in infrastructure projects. It is anticipated that faster logistics and reduced transportation costs will also boost other sectors, such as tourism and education. Kyrgyz journalist Nichiporova highlighted that the project modernizes the ancient Silk Road route, paving the way for cultural and technological exchanges. Experts agree that this railway will strengthen both regional trade and international cooperation.
