Shu Yong, a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, has proposed the establishment of an international science and culture zone in Beijing, aiming to revitalize the city’s cultural heritage associated with its status as a “Dual Olympic City” and major events such as the Belt and Road Initiative forums. This initiative aligns with the vision of building a “Community with a Shared Future for Mankind.”
With a 3,000-year history as a city and 800 years as a capital, Beijing has hosted significant events, including the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2022 Winter Olympics, leaving behind a valuable Olympic cultural legacy. Additionally, high-profile summits such as the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Beijing Summit have contributed to the city’s rich heritage. To fully leverage these cultural assets, Shu has suggested establishing a cultural zone in key locations like the National Convention Center and the Olympic Park. This special zone would not only serve as a showcase for China’s rich history and culture but also act as a platform to foster international cooperation and exchange.
In global metropolitan renewal efforts, new cultural and artistic districts are being developed to enhance cities’ cultural identities and innovation capabilities. Examples include Paris’ La Défense district in the 1970s, New York’s High Line Park transformation in the 1990s, and Tokyo’s Roppongi district. Inspired by these successful cases, Shu’s proposed science and culture zone will integrate with Beijing’s existing cultural landmarks, such as the Party History Museum, Science Museum, Traditional Handicrafts Museum, and Archaeology Museum.
This zone will serve as a hub where sports and culture, as well as science and art, intersect, reflecting Beijing’s commitment to cultural innovation and sustainable development. Additionally, it will set a global example for the efficient post-Olympics utilization of sports venues, reinforcing Beijing’s role as a leader in cultural and technological advancement.
