The government of Cabo Verde and China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen cooperation in energy, water resources, agriculture and integrated development.

The MoU was signed in Praia, the capital of Cabo Verde, on Tuesday by Cabo Verde’s Minister of Project Coordination and Access to Funds Jose Carlos Varela and CMEC Chairman Wang Bo.

In the energy sector, the two sides plan to cooperate on the modernization and rehabilitation of thermal power facilities, as well as the development of renewable energy, energy storage, power grids and supporting infrastructure for electric vehicles.

Cooperation in water resources and agriculture will cover seawater desalination, wastewater reuse and smart water management.

The MoU also includes projects along the Sao Vicente waterfront and the establishment of a development corridor across Cabo Verde’s northern islands.

Wang said the MoU establishes a general framework for practical medium- and long-term cooperation, under which CMEC intends to leverage its expertise in planning, engineering, investment, financing, management and maintenance to support Cabo Verde’s development.

Chinese Ambassador to Cabo Verde Zhang Yang said the signing demonstrates the two sides’ commitment to deepening mutually beneficial cooperation.

Cabo Verde’s Prime Minister Francisco Carvalho said the areas covered by the MoU are vital to the government’s development agenda, adding that Cabo Verde attaches great importance to cooperation with China.
