The 2024 China-Cambodia Digital Economy Cooperation Forum convened in Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh on Monday to discuss ways to strengthen digital economy cooperation between the two countries. Delivering the opening speech, Cambodian Minister of Economy and Finance Aun Pornmoniroth said the forum is vital for further promoting cooperation between Cambodia and China, especially in the fields of technology, innovation and digital economy.
Mr Pornmoniroth said Cambodia and China are working closely to promote the digital economy, with the Southeast Asian country cooperating with Alibaba to boost e-commerce and UnionPay International and Ant International’s Alipay+ to support cross-border QR code payments. Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin praised Cambodia for its rapid development in the digital economy and expressed admiration for the significant increase in mobile payments made with smartphones. Wang said he was pleased to see that China-Cambodia digital economy cooperation is progressing well, adding that China will continue to help Cambodia achieve the target of 100 per cent high-speed internet coverage in urban areas and 70 per cent in rural areas by 2025.
Lin Shiqiang, President of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia, said that China Unicom, Huawei and other companies have played a very important role in the construction of the Cambodia-China submarine cable line, providing strong support for the deep integration and connectivity of the two countries’ digital economy.
