Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will pay an official visit to China at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
According to an announcement made by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning at a regular press briefing held today, Prime Minister Carney will visit China from 14 to 17 January 2026 at the invitation of Premier Li Qiang.
Meanwhile, a statement from the Office of the Canadian Prime Minister indicated that during the visit, Carney will hold discussions with Chinese officials on a range of issues, including trade, energy, agriculture, and international security. The visit will mark the first time a Canadian prime minister has traveled to China since December 2017.
Canadian media have characterized the visit as a process of “resetting” bilateral relations and “thawing tensions.” According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Canadian Parliamentary Secretary Cody Blois stated yesterday that the visit represents a follow-up step after a turning point in bilateral relations. Blois emphasized that Carney believes there are concrete opportunities for cooperation between the two countries.
