The China-aided New Gwadar International Airport in Pakistan’s Balochistan region is set to be completed and handed over to Pakistani authorities in a few days. This new facility, capable of handling wide-body aircraft, aims to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth in the region. Unlike the limited-capacity old airport, the new one will support both passenger flights and cargo operations.
Project officials noted challenges during construction, such as water scarcity and saline soil, which were overcome with innovative techniques. Engineers from Pakistan and China worked diligently on the project, which is classified as a 4F-grade airport, allowing it to accommodate the largest civil aircraft.
As part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the project will help establish Gwadar as a major logistics hub. Officials trained in China will also contribute to the efficient operation of the airport. The airport is seen as a symbol of friendship between Pakistan and China.
