China’s State Council has greenlit a directive aimed at bolstering the protection, development, utilization, and restoration of the Yangtze River Economic Belt and its basin. Crafted by the Ministry of Natural Resources, the directive outlines a comprehensive conservation framework slated to be established by 2025, with a focus on safeguarding grain production, ecology, flood control, and cultural heritage within the economic belt and river basin.
By 2035, the directive envisions significant progress in ecological preservation, enhanced regional connectivity, and improved livability across the economic belt. This strategic roadmap is designed to guide the spatial planning of land, inland waters, and marine areas spanning over 1,100 county-level districts along the economic belt and river basin.
The Yangtze River, originating from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, serves as China’s longest waterway, stretching over 6,300 kilometers through 11 provincial-level regions before merging into the East China Sea. Along its course lie key economic hubs, megacities, and major rice-producing regions, underlining the river basin’s pivotal role in China’s socio-economic landscape.
The approval of this directive underscores China’s commitment to balancing economic development with environmental conservation and underscores the nation’s proactive approach to sustainable resource management and regional planning.
