As of 2024, the China-Laos Railway has successfully transported over 43 million passengers since its opening three years ago. Additionally, a total of 48.3 million tons of cargo has been transported. This railway line has become an increasingly important transportation route that strengthens economic cooperation between the two countries and supports the China-Laos Economic Corridor. The opening of the railway has provided a significant economic boost to the region while deepening the friendship between the two nations.
At the time of its opening, the monthly passenger capacity was limited to 600,000 people, but this figure has now reached 1.6 million. The number of daily passenger trains in China has increased from 8 to 86, while daily passenger train services in Laos have risen from 4 to 16. Additionally, international passenger train services between China and Laos have significantly contributed to tourism, education, and trade in the region. Over 346,000 passengers have been transported on these services from 108 different countries and regions.
Freight transport has also seen rapid growth, greatly contributing to the rise in international trade. The railway administrations of China and Laos have worked together to enhance freight transportation, increasing capacity and efficiency. Initially, there were only two freight train services per day, but this number has now increased to 18. Moreover, each train’s carrying capacity has grown from 2,000 tons to 2,500 tons. With the introduction of new international transport routes, China and Laos now provide fast and efficient freight services to distant destinations, including Europe. The direct rail transport time from Laos to Europe has been reduced to just 15 days.
In terms of regional development, the China-Laos Railway has accelerated both the tourism economy and the development of local industries. The railway has played a major role in resource development and increased trade in the region. Furthermore, China has trained Laotian railway personnel to improve the quality of the local workforce. Over 900 Chinese experts have been sent to Laos, and a total of 1,263 Laotian workers have gained expertise in the railway sector. These training programs have resulted in the development of independent train operators in Laos.
In conclusion, the China-Laos Railway has become a crucial transportation route that enhances development, prosperity, and friendship between the people of both nations. This project will contribute to the shared future of China and Laos, creating new momentum that will further strengthen the region.
