China Successfully Completes Tests of 5,000-Square-Meter Giant Energy Kite

China has successfully completed flight tests of a 5,000-square-meter giant energy kite developed for its high-altitude wind energy project in Inner Mongolia. According to Global Times, the kite—developed under a national R&D program for high-altitude wind energy and currently the largest energy-generating kite in the world—successfully completed all planned flight tests on November 12 in the Alxa Left Banner region of Inner Mongolia.

The system, developed under the leadership of China Energy Engineering Corp, demonstrated smooth deployment and retraction of the kite during the tests. This achievement represents a significant milestone in advancing China’s high-altitude wind energy technology toward engineering applications.

Resembling a giant kite, the system captures wind energy at altitudes above 300 meters and transmits it to a ground-based generator via a tether cable. In the latest tests, the deployment and retraction of the 5,000-square-meter main kite along with two 1,200-square-meter auxiliary kites were successfully accomplished.

High-altitude wind energy holds considerable global potential due to the more stable wind currents at high altitudes in terms of speed and direction. China’s successful test demonstrates significant progress in the “ground-operated” energy generation model.
