The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been accelerating its energy transition in recent years, aiming to reduce carbon emissions. In this context, Chinese companies play a crucial role in the UAE’s clean energy projects, contributing to the shared development goals of both countries. One of the most tangible examples of this collaboration is the Dubai Solar Park, which started in 2018 and was constructed by Shanghai Electric Group. The project has a total installed capacity of 950 megawatts and helps prevent 1.6 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.
The solar energy technologies used in this project are seen as a significant step towards the UAE’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Chinese engineers, leveraging the technical advantages of the project, are contributing to optimizing the UAE’s energy structure and promoting sustainable development. The project, with its massive solar tower rising in Dubai’s desert landscape, provides energy for approximately 320,000 homes and boosts environmentally friendly energy production.
Chinese companies are not only involved in solar energy but also support the UAE’s energy transition by participating in wind energy projects. In Abu Dhabi, a power plant built by China Machinery Engineering Corporation, with a capacity of 2.1 gigawatts, meets the electricity needs of about 200,000 homes and prevents 240,000 tons of carbon emissions annually. In addition to these projects, China’s construction group PowerChina has completed the UAE’s first wind energy demonstration project, proving the economic viability of wind energy in the region.
This collaboration between China and the UAE extends beyond energy projects to form a partnership focused on environmental sustainability and global green development goals. These projects also contribute to deepening the friendly relations between China and the UAE under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.
