In a groundbreaking veterinary milestone, specialists in China have successfully corrected a giant panda’s jaw deformity using growth-modification orthodontic techniques adapted from human dentistry. Developed jointly by the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and the West China Hospital of Stomatology, the intervention addressed severe mandibular deviation in a young panda named Beixia, which had compromised his ability to suckle and feed. By deploying a custom-fitted 3D appliance and orthodontic traction bands over a six-month developmental window, the multidisciplinary team fully restored symmetrical jaw alignment and chewing functions, presenting a novel therapeutic model for wildlife craniofacial care.
