The “Global Cities 2024 Report under the Belt and Road Initiative” launch event, organized by the China Urban Planning and Design Research Institute, was successfully held on December 6. This marked the sixth edition of the report since its inception in 2019. Under the theme “Transcending the Boundaries of Globalization,” the event explored the developmental shifts and future trends of global cities amidst periods of fragmentation and turmoil. The report examined the collaboration levels and dynamics of cities participating in the Belt and Road Initiative, aiming to enhance the diversity and resilience of global urban networks and foster more inclusive urban development worldwide.

The report addresses challenges and opportunities faced by cities in an era where globalization is increasingly shifting towards regionalization and community-oriented development. The 2024 edition improved its index indicators, data sources, and algorithms, focusing on counter-globalization trends. It analyzed community characteristics within cities’ innovation, production, and service sectors, as well as their connectivity networks. It emphasized the need for major Chinese cities like Shanghai and Shenzhen to strengthen their core competitiveness and deepen collaboration with international intermediary cities. Meanwhile, inland cities such as Chongqing and Xi’an were encouraged to leverage their advantages as pivotal hubs in the Belt and Road Initiative.

Finally, Wang Kai, President of the China Urban Planning and Design Research Institute, called on all parties to jointly explore new, higher-quality development paths for global cities and regions. He expressed the institute’s readiness to provide academic and intellectual support for the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative.
