On May 30, 2025, the Interim General Assembly of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) International Green Development Coalition was held in Beijing. Huang Runqiu, China’s Minister of Ecology and Environment and Co-Chair of the Coalition, delivered a speech emphasizing that the three major environmental crises—climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss—are increasingly impacting humanity. He highlighted China’s unwavering commitment to an ecological and green development path, its efforts to build a green BRI, and its significant contributions to global sustainable development. These include its carbon peak and neutrality goals, the launch of the Kunming Biodiversity Fund, and the establishment of the world’s largest and most comprehensive new energy industry chain. He also stressed the importance of advancing global cooperation in technology, production capacity, and standard alignment for a low-carbon, circular economy.
The meeting underlined the Coalition’s achievements since its first general assembly in May 2023, particularly in supporting policy dialogue, research, capacity building, and information sharing. The Ministry of Ecology and Environment affirmed its continued support for the Coalition and its international operations. Coalition Chair Zhao Yingmin stated that the Coalition aims to become a global platform promoting green and low-carbon transformation in the Global South and a key driver for implementing the Sustainable Development Goals. Representatives of member organizations and partners participated both online and in person, with calls to expand membership, deepen platform functions, and strengthen practical cooperation to further contribute to the high-quality development of a green Belt and Road.
