The number of trains passing through Alataw Pass, one of China’s key border gates, reached 2,204, an 11.2% increase compared to the same period last year. The implementation of a 24/7 customs clearance system in 2024 significantly shortened train passage times and increased transport capacity. This development reinforces Alataw Pass’s critical role in facilitating logistics connections between China, Central Asia, and Europe under the Belt and Road Initiative.
While imports through Alataw Pass were primarily focused on minerals and fertilizers, exports included high-tech equipment and daily consumer goods. Cooperation between Chinese and Kazakh railway authorities helped streamline logistics processes, making trade more efficient. Additionally, the digitalization of customs procedures and the facilitation of cross-border trade further boosted economic interactions in the region.
These advancements strengthen Alataw Pass’s strategic importance under the Belt and Road Initiative, highlighting China’s ongoing key role in international logistics and trade. With continued infrastructure development and railway network expansion, the region’s influence on global trade is expected to grow in the coming years.
