While most first-time foreign tourists to China prefer popular destinations like Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou, American travel blogger Zachary Iziah Smith chose a different route and decided to explore the historic Gansu Province in northwest China. “I want to document the transformation along the ancient Silk Road through my lens,” said the 32-year-old Smith, who described his journey as unforgettable—from the local tradition of Sanpaotai (covered-bowl tea) to the colorful Danxia landforms, all of which reflect the unique charm of the Hexi Corridor.
Smith was among approximately 140 guests from over 20 countries and regions who attended the 2025 Gansu Silk Road International Tourism Conference held last week. Participants included officials from international tourism organizations, representatives of travel agencies, and social media influencers. The event showcased the cultural and natural richness of the Hexi Corridor, one of the historic routes of the Silk Road. Thanks to China’s visa exemption policies, there has been a significant increase in the number of international visitors to the country. Countries like Malaysia have become key tourism markets for Gansu. The Gansu Department of Culture and Tourism emphasized that the growing interest has turned the region into one of the major hubs of international tourism in China and contributed to the global tourism industry.
