In his 2022 inauguration speech, Colombian President Gustavo Petro referenced the famous final line of Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, declaring, “Today, that second chance has begun.” Colombia’s official accession to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in 2023 has become a powerful symbol of this new opportunity. Coinciding with the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Colombia, this step marks a milestone in the deepening of their strategic partnership.
Projects under the BRI framework are making tangible contributions to Colombia’s development goals. Infrastructure initiatives, such as the Bogotá Metro Line 1—undertaken by Chinese companies—are both creating jobs and transforming urban transportation. As of the end of April 2025, 54% of the metro’s construction had been completed, generating over 13,000 direct and indirect jobs. China also remains Colombia’s second-largest trading partner, with particularly strong growth in agricultural exports like coffee and cut flowers. These developments demonstrate that Colombia views cooperation with China not merely as an economic engagement, but as a strategic choice for national development.
