Dennis Munene, Director of the Central Africa Center at the Kenya-African Policy Research Institute, recently stated in an interview that the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has strongly supported Kenya’s infrastructure development and economic growth, promoted regional economic cooperation and cultural exchange, and brought unprecedented development opportunities to the country.
Munene mentioned that Kenya, as an important participant in the Belt and Road Initiative, has greatly benefited from the initiative. Specifically, he highlighted that projects such as the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway and the expansion of the Mombasa Port have improved Kenya’s transportation infrastructure and enhanced connectivity with neighboring countries. Munene noted that the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway is one of the most significant infrastructure projects Kenya has undertaken in recent years. Not only does this project connect important cities such as Nairobi and Mombasa, but it also extends to Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This regional connectivity has facilitated increased trade between Kenya and neighboring countries, fostering economic cooperation among African nations.
Discussing green transformation and the application of new technologies, Munene emphasized the significant role the Belt and Road Initiative has played in supporting African countries’ transition to clean energy. He pointed out China’s leadership in renewable energy technologies and mentioned that Kenya has engaged in numerous collaborations with China in renewable energy fields such as solar and wind power. These partnerships have helped Kenya achieve energy self-sufficiency and also supported the green transformation of the African continent.
Munene further stated that the joint construction of the Belt and Road has brought about significant transformation on the African continent, providing African countries with more say and greater capacity for independent development. He also added, “Kenya will continue to actively participate in all ongoing collaborations under the Belt and Road Initiative and will keep contributing to regional cooperation and development by jointly addressing global challenges.”
