The New Road Connecting Two Countries

The Pamir Plateau, throughout history, has served as a strategic region for the Silk Road, connecting the East and West. Today, a new highway linking China and Tajikistan stretches across the challenging mountainous terrain of the Pamirs, continuing the spirit of this historical connection.

The China-Tajikistan Highway, built in the 1940s, begins in Dushanbe and connects to China’s Karakoram Highway. However, due to increased trade volume and the effects of natural disasters, many parts of the road were heavily damaged. As a result, expansion and renovation efforts were initiated in 2009 by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) to increase the road’s capacity. The first phase was completed in 2014, and the second phase, which began in 2022, is providing modern transportation infrastructure by building tunnels, bridges, and expanded roads through the rugged terrain.

The project has become a significant source of hope for both logistics and local communities. Tajik drivers note that the travel time, which once took hours due to the difficult road conditions, is now reduced to 1.5 hours thanks to the renovated roads.

New Opportunities for Regional Development and Trade

The second phase of the China-Tajikistan Highway creates a transportation network through 15 villages in the mountainous terrain. The local population expresses that their daily lives have become easier due to the construction of the road. The project not only contributes to transportation but also generates economic opportunities. Many locals are earning income by working on the project, and trade between China and Tajikistan is steadily increasing.

    Hope for a Better Future

The people living in the villages around the highway report that the project has significantly improved their living standards. Chinese engineers not only built the main road but also repaired village roads, making daily life easier for the local population. Additionally, thanks to the safety of the highway, the risk of road closures due to harsh winter conditions has decreased.

The China-Tajikistan Highway strengthens not only the economic but also the cultural ties between the two countries. As more Tajik youth begin to explore China, the interest of Chinese tourists in the region is also growing. A local worker involved in the project expresses a desire to improve his Chinese skills and become a tour guide in order to host more Chinese tourists in the future. This road is not only connecting two countries but also establishing a new bridge of friendship between their peoples.
