In recent years, the relationship between Ethiopia and China has been rapidly developing, and the two countries’ “comprehensive strategic partnership” continues to progress steadily. Samuel Kifle, the Rector of Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, told our newspaper in an interview that political trust, economic and commercial cooperation, along with cultural exchange, form the fundamental pillars of the bilateral relationship. He added, “Joint initiatives in areas such as education, culture, and tourism continually inject new dynamism into the bilateral relations.”
Kifle emphasized that Chinese companies have been investing in major projects in Ethiopia, such as highways, urban light rail systems, and national industrial parks, and that these collaborations have accelerated Ethiopia’s modernization process. Noting that cultural and human interactions between the two countries are deepening within the framework of the “Belt and Road” Initiative, Kifle recalled that at the end of 2023, the Confucius Institute at Addis Ababa University celebrated its 10th anniversary. He stated, “Over the span of more than ten years, approximately 10,000 Ethiopian students have participated in the comprehensive Chinese language programs offered by the Confucius Institute. This is a testament to how the friendship between the two countries has strengthened over the years.”
Having visited China on several occasions, Kifle mentioned that he toured universities and research institutes in Beijing and Tianjin last June. He noted that China has made significant progress in higher education, and that these developments have contributed considerable scientific and technological advances to the country’s economic and social development. Emphasizing the growth of trade and economic relations between Ethiopia and China, Kifle stated, “The successful partnerships and mutual support between the academic institutions of both countries highlight the vibrancy of our bilateral relations.”
Reflecting on future collaborations, Kifle said, “China is Africa’s most reliable development partner. As Addis Ababa University, we plan to further strengthen our cooperation with higher education and research institutions in China. By increasing our efforts in joint research projects and cultural exchanges, we will continue to bridge and reinforce the friendship between the two countries.”
