Researchers from Yunnan University have achieved the world’s first practical demonstration of underwater solar energy generation at a depth of 10 meters in the South China Sea. Utilizing wide-bandgap perovskite photovoltaic cells optimized for sunlight penetrating seawater, the submerged modules generated 324 milliwatt-hours across two hours to power LEDs and charge lithium-ion batteries. With laboratory tests indicating an efficiency of 34.71% and an estimated submerged operational life of roughly 5.5 years, the breakthrough provides a continuous, self-sustaining clean power pathway for maritime exploration, aquaculture, and deep-sea monitoring systems.
