Jamestown, located in Ghana’s capital city, Accra, was once one of the region’s poorest areas. The outdated and dilapidated infrastructure of the century-old fishing harbor had hindered the further development of local fisheries. However, a modern fishing harbor built by a Chinese company has transformed the face of Jamestown.
The China-supported Ghana Fishing Harbor Integrated Facility Project, which was recently completed and handed over to Ghana, was opened to much excitement. Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo emphasized the significant importance of the harbor to Ghana during the handover ceremony. “This harbor is the fruit of years of effort and the realization of a decades-long dream for the people of Ghana,” he said, expressing gratitude for China’s support in Ghana’s social and economic development. The President also noted that fishing is one of the pillars of Ghana’s economy and society, and that the project would boost employment, improve the lives of fishermen, and inject vitality into the economy.
According to representatives of the China Railway Port and Waterway Bureau Group, the project took four years to complete. Ama Wulu, President of the Jamestown Fishermen’s Association, stated that the new harbor facilities built by the Chinese company have made the fishermen’s work more efficient and safer. Wulu highlighted that industries surrounding the harbor were rapidly developing, turning the harbor into a major economic pillar for their community. Additionally, he emphasized the technical support and training provided as part of the project, which helped fishermen learn modern fishing techniques and equipment maintenance, significantly enhancing their work. The project also involved the participation of over 200 local workers.
China’s Ambassador to Ghana, Tang Dafa, stated that China considers solidarity and cooperation with Ghana and other African nations a cornerstone of its foreign policy. The Ambassador described the China-supported fishing harbor project as another milestone in China-Ghana friendship, reflecting the strong commitment of both nations to advancing modernization together.
