China has implemented unilateral visa-free entry and mutual visa exemption agreements with 75 countries as part of efforts to simplify visa regulations and promote international engagement. The announcement was made on Wednesday by Wang Zhizhong, head of the National Immigration Administration (NIA), during a press conference.
Wang stated that during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021–2025), the number of countries eligible for visa-free transit through China increased to 55, and the number of entry ports rose to 60 across 24 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities.
Additionally, the permitted stay for visa-free transit has been extended to 240 hours (10 days). According to Wang, these measures have greatly facilitated travel for foreigners visiting China for tourism, business, and other purposes.
The updated visa-free policies have also strengthened interactions between Chinese citizens and people around the world, fostering closer and more friendly ties. “Many foreign visitors have come to understand China more accurately and comprehensively through firsthand experience,” Wang said.
According to official data, during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China’s border inspection authorities handled a total of 1.556 billion entry and exit movements. More than 98 million cross-border vehicles — including planes, ships, trains, and cars — were also processed.
“China is now among the countries with the most efficient border clearance systems in the world,” Wang noted. He also emphasized the NIA’s ongoing efforts to enhance policies and mechanisms aimed at attracting global talent.
Wang said that a comprehensive support system is being developed to cover entry visas, stay and residence permits, and related services. “Many high-level international professionals have come to China to support the country’s modernization efforts and have contributed actively across various key sectors,” he added.
