At the foot of Mount Menengai in Kenya, the Sosian Geothermal Power Plant is operated jointly by Chinese and Kenyan engineers. Built by China’s Kaishan Group and commissioned in 2023, the plant has helped boost Kenya’s energy supply. Additionally, Chinese companies are upgrading Kenya’s first geothermal plant, Olkaria I, to enhance clean energy capacity. George Aluru, Chairman of the Kenya Electricity Association, states that the China-Kenya energy cooperation has significantly contributed to the country’s energy self-sufficiency.
In western Kenya, Chinese-constructed irrigation and flood control projects along the Enzoia River have improved water access for thousands of farmers. With China’s support in agricultural technology, tomato grafting methods have increased crop yields while drastically reducing plant diseases. As a result, many farmers have seen a rise in income. Agricultural modernization projects between China and Kenya continue to expand under the “China-Africa Agricultural Cooperation Partnership Initiative.”
China-Kenya collaboration also thrives in education and skills development. Hundreds of Kenyan staff working on the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway have received technical training from Chinese experts, becoming proficient in railway operations. Moreover, Confucius Institutes at the University of Nairobi and other institutions have launched “Chinese + Vocational Skills” programs tailored to sectors like textiles, engineering, and tourism. Experts note that such initiatives provide crucial support for Kenya’s sustainable development.
