The partnership between China and Kyrgyzstan has increasingly expanded into green development, with solar power emerging as a prominent area of cooperation. A key milestone was reached in April 2024 with the groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase of a 400-megawatt photovoltaic project in the Issyk-Kul region.
Through close collaboration, a large-scale photovoltaic power station in Kemin District, Chui Region, began operations in December 2025 as the country’s first major solar facility. Spanning 230 hectares with 193,000 solar panels, the station generates approximately 200 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by over 150,000 tonnes and providing a stable energy supply to local communities. Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov praised the project for boosting energy security, while local residents noted that power cuts have significantly decreased.
With China’s cumulative direct investments in Kyrgyzstan exceeding $2 billion by the end of July, bilateral cooperation continues to progress steadily across infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and green development.
