The China-Laos Railway is boosting Laos’ economy and improving people’s daily lives by increasing trade, enhancing transport efficiency, and expanding market access, especially for agricultural products.
Since its launch, the railway has transported more than 14 million tons of goods, becoming a vital link connecting Laos with regional and international markets. In the first seven months of 2025 alone, freight volume reached 3.47 million tons, up 6.8% year-on-year. Among this, 171,000 tons were fruit, marking a sharp 62.8% increase.
Saiynoy, a farmer and vendor from Savannakhet, said the railway enables local farmers to boost production and reach foreign markets. “Convenient transport raises farmers’ income, encourages production, and creates more jobs in rural areas,” he said.
The Laos-China Railway Company (LCRC) announced plans to further optimize operations in the second half of 2025, focusing on improving agricultural exports and service quality.
Beyond trade, the railway also makes everyday life easier. Phouphet, an office worker in Vientiane, said travel time for business trips has dropped from 6–12 hours to just 2 hours, which also boosts tourism.
For 32-year-old worker Pao, the railway symbolizes Laos’ growing connectivity and potential: “It’s a symbol of progress — creating opportunities, strengthening the economy, and improving lives,” he said.
Somhak, a 41-year-old from Vientiane Province, added that the railway makes family visits easier and has improved infrastructure around stations, noting that with proper management, it will bring long-term benefits to the country.
