Gauri Singh, Deputy Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), emphasized China’s pivotal role in driving the global transition to renewable energy. Speaking during the World Government Summit in Dubai, Singh lauded China’s significant contributions in renewable energy and extended Lunar New Year greetings to the Chinese people.
Singh highlighted China’s consistent prominence in renewable energy, noting its spirit of courage, vitality, and passion symbolized by the Year of the Dragon. He urged collective passion towards shaping a sustainable future for the planet. IRENA, with 169 member states, spearheads efforts to promote global renewable transformation, aid countries in energy transitions, and provide essential data and analysis on green technology innovation, policy, finance, and investments.
Singh underscored China’s role as a manufacturing hub, which enables many countries to advance their national renewable energy plans more effectively by reducing transformation costs. According to IRENA’s 2023 Renewable Capacity Statistics, published last year, China contributed approximately 48% of the global total renewable capacity increase in 2022. Notably, China installed two-thirds of new hydropower capacity, 45% of new solar power capacity, half of new wind power capacity, and 57% of new bioenergy capacity in 2022.
Singh praised China’s direct and proactive approach in handling renewable energy initiatives, emphasizing its importance in international cooperation. He commended China’s support to numerous countries in reshaping and establishing assets in the new energy system, underscoring the potential for a more equitable energy transition with continued efforts.
