The first Hualong One nuclear power unit in south China’s Hainan Free Trade Port has officially commenced commercial operation, marking a major milestone in the island’s clean energy transition. Located in Changjiang Li Autonomous County, Unit 3 of the Huaneng Changjiang Phase II project boasts a 1.2-million-kilowatt capacity and will deliver approximately 9 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. Alongside Unit 4—scheduled for commercial launch in August 2027—the dual-reactor site is projected to generate 18 billion kilowatt-hours per year, supplying power to one-third of Hainan’s population while cutting carbon emissions by roughly 11.68 million tonnes. Developed with China’s homegrown third-generation reactor technology, the facility also integrates the country’s first fully localized, multi-reactor production management platform.
