The first seminar on Chinese language education was held on Friday in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, emphasizing the need to promote Chinese language learning in the East African country. The event brought together Chinese and Ethiopian language experts, focusing on establishing an effective system for teaching Chinese in Ethiopia and addressing the challenges faced in this process.
Zhang Yawei, the cultural counselor at the Chinese Embassy in Ethiopia, said the conference aimed to share experiences, build on achievements, address issues, and jointly advance Chinese language education in Ethiopia. “With the acceleration of globalization and the increase in cultural exchange between China and Ethiopia, promoting Chinese language education in Ethiopia is of great importance. It helps Ethiopian students understand Chinese culture and history, creating more opportunities for them in the future,” he said. Zhang noted that Ethiopia faces challenges such as a shortage of teaching staff and resources, adding that a significant number of Ethiopian students are currently studying Chinese at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in both Ethiopian and Chinese universities.
