In a recent interview, former Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf stated that the growing cooperation between Egypt and China under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) represents a “win-win model” that promotes deepening partnerships and mutual development.
Sharaf noted that he had recently visited the industrial park of Chinese home appliance giant Haier and the assembly plant of Chinese auto brand Jetour in Egypt, describing these projects as the fruits of a long-standing partnership between the two countries. Emphasizing that Chinese investments bring technology, job opportunities, and export potential to Egypt, Sharaf said that such collaborations offer mutual benefits.
As a member of the Advisory Council of the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, Sharaf highlighted that the increase in Chinese investments in Egypt reflects the strengthening of bilateral relations within the BRI framework.
He pointed out that Egypt-China cooperation under the BRI holds significant potential in three key areas: industrial modernization, the expansion of joint economic zones, and the promotion of cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
Sharaf praised the China-Egypt TEDA Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone in Suez and emphasized the importance of replicating this model across the country. He also underlined the rich cultural heritage of both nations, stating that cultural rapprochement helps ensure that strong governmental ties are also reflected among the people.
Sharaf further drew attention to the growing influence of the BRICS bloc, noting that Egypt’s participation in this structure—of which China is a founding member—is a key step for increased global engagement. He added that BRICS Plus is a valuable tool for shaping the Global South.
“Cooperation between China and developing countries should not be underestimated,” Sharaf concluded, stressing that if fully realized, such cooperation could generate significant synergy and strength for the Global South.
