Xinjiang is rapidly evolving into China’s key energy supply base, while also strengthening regional economic cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. In recent years, the Zhungeer East Economic and Technological Development Zone has become a major energy center through significant investments. Raw coal production increased from 50 million tons in 2015 to 206 million tons in 2023, while coal production capacity grew from 136 million tons to 351 million tons. As of 2024, electricity generation in the region has reached 68.37 billion kilowatt-hours.
Logistical infrastructure is also expanding rapidly. In 2024, coal shipments from Xinjiang to other regions reached 90.61 million tons, marking a 50.2% annual increase. Local enterprises are investing in dedicated railway lines and logistics hubs to further enhance the region’s trade potential.
Thanks to the Belt and Road Initiative, Xinjiang has become a crucial trade gateway for China’s westward expansion. In 2024, a total of 19,000 China-Europe freight train services were conducted, with 16,414 passing through Xinjiang’s Alashankou and Khorgos border ports. With its growing railway transportation and trade volume, the region continues to strengthen its strategic importance.
Regional cooperation is also expanding. Chinese engineers are participating in infrastructure projects in Central Asian countries, while the local tourism sector is developing new destinations in the region. Logistics companies are leveraging the TIR system for cross-border transportation and tapping into new markets. With the construction of the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway, logistics opportunities in the region will further increase.
Xinjiang’s rapidly growing energy and logistics capabilities continue to play a vital role in both China’s domestic market and international trade.
